Donation of school laboratory equipment by DEF Burkina Faso

As part of its project to support schools in modernizing their learning tools, DEF Burkina Faso has donated laboratory equipment to schools in Burkina Faso.  The equipment, consisting of microscopes, test tubes, test tube stands, thermometers, scales, etc., will enable pupils in these schools to improve their knowledge of the exact sciences through practical work.

In Burkina Faso, as in many other African countries, 9 out of 10 schools do not have a school laboratory worth that name. This means that teachers do not have the necessary tools to teach applied exact sciences.
As a result, pupils finish school without ever seeing a microscope, doing tests on rocks with tubes , seeing how electric current works, etc.
In rural areas of Burkina Faso, the situation is even worse, as schools do not even have a basic tools, let alone laboratories.
In view of the above, DEF Burkina Faso has initiated a project called ‘Support for learning the exact sciences in Africa’.
The main aim of this project is to help schools in Burkina Faso to set up school laboratories to enable pupils to carry out practical work in the exact sciences.
As part of this project, we have donated school laboratory equipment to five (05) schools in Burkina Faso.
These schools were chosen because of their geographical location (rural area) and the fact that they cater for IDP (internally displaced person) pupils. These pupils are victims of terrorist attacks, many of whom have lost their parents.
Thanks to the laboratory equipment we have donated to these schools, their pupils will be able to see and handle microscopes for the first time, use test tubes and understand what electrical voltage and amperage are.
Dozens of other schools have been identified as part of this project and we are looking for partners to enable these thousands of pupils to see and handle school laboratory equipment.

If you have microscopes, test tubes or measuring equipment that you no longer use, donate them to us for the pupils in Africa.

Creation of a digital library for a school in Burkina Faso

Nowadays, digital technology has become an essential tool for education. In Burkina Faso, digital technology is a tool that can make education more accessible and boost pupil performance if it is used properly.
Digital libraries are also a way of providing schools with more teaching resources for their pupils.
DEF Burkina Faso is currently working to set up a dozen digital libraries like the one we have just installed at the Lycée Privé Sompingda in Songdin.

A school library is very important for a school. It provides pupils with additional means for their learning.
Unfortunately, many schools in Burkina Faso do not have libraries for their pupils, and this is a major handicap to their learning.
Nowadays, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are indispensable tools for learning.
A transition to digital education is underway and should help to improve student performance.
To support schools in the digital transition of learning tools, DEF Burkina Faso has set up a project called ‘digital libraries for schools in Burkina Faso’.
The aim of this project is to set up digital libraries with a rcomputer room so that pupils can use them to access digital resources.
As part of this project, we have set up a digital library with a computer room equipped with 15 laptops at the Lycée Privé Sompingda de Songdin in the rural commune of SAABA in Burkina Faso.
The online system we set up consists of :
    a) Library management system
The school has a small library with about thirty books. Pupils have paper forms for book subscriptions, loans and returns.
To enable the school to better manage the existing library, we installed an Open Source library management software (PMB).
Thanks to this software, the school’s library is now managed digitally. Subscriptions, book loans and returns are done directly on the software.

    b) Online school resources system
In order to give pupils access to more teaching resources for their learning, we have installed Open Source software (Moodle) which enables teachers to put learning resources (lessons, exercises) online so that pupils can access them from the computers in the digital library.

    c) Computer room
We have set up a computer room equipped with 15 laptops connected to the Internet.
Pupils can use these computers to access the digital library and also do research on the Internet.

The completion of this project has made a major educational contribution to the school, which now has more resources and tools enabling teachers to better supervise their pupils.

We are currently looking for partners so that other schools also benefit from a digital library.
